Square Image Sizes

Exact 1:1 dimensions for Instagram, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Facebook, X and product listings — plus how to export each size for free.

What size should a square image be?

A square image always has a 1:1 aspect ratio — equal width and height — but the pixel count depends on where you publish. Social feeds, profile pictures, marketplace listings and app icons all prefer different square photo dimensions. Using the right size keeps your image sharp and stops platforms from applying their own surprise crop.

As a rule of thumb: 1080 × 1080 is the all-purpose social square, 400 × 400 covers most avatars, 500 × 500 matches WhatsApp DPs, and 800 × 800 or larger works for product photos. When in doubt, export larger and let the platform downscale — never upload a soft, undersized master.

You can create any of these sizes with the free resize image to square tool or the 1:1 aspect ratio converter. Both run in your browser; your photo is never uploaded.

Square image size chart by platform

Use this table as a quick reference for square photo dimensions. Display sizes can change, so when a platform accepts larger uploads, prefer the bigger master listed in the notes.

Instagram square image size

Instagram's square feed post displays at 1080 × 1080. Upload a true 1:1 image and Instagram shows the full frame without the aggressive center crop that hits tall portraits and wide landscapes. Profile pictures are also uploaded as squares and masked into circles — keep faces centered.

Portrait posts (4:5) and Stories/Reels (9:16) are not squares. When you specifically need the classic grid look, prepare the file with the square image for Instagram tool, which presets 1080 × 1080 and lets you crop or pad.

WhatsApp profile picture size

WhatsApp stores profile photos (DPs) as a 500 × 500square, then shows them as circles in chats. If you upload a tall photo, WhatsApp's in-app editor crops the top and bottom — which is why heads and feet disappear. Pad the photo to a square first with the WhatsApp DP resizer, download 500 × 500, and set it as your DP without zooming in.

Blur fill is a popular DP look when solid bars feel too stark — enable it on the DP resizer or use the dedicated blur background square page.

LinkedIn, Facebook and X square sizes

LinkedIn and X (Twitter) both treat 1200 × 1200as a strong square post size — sharp on desktop timelines and still clean on mobile. Facebook's square feed posts align with the Instagram habit of 1080 × 1080, so one asset often covers both Meta surfaces.

Profile photos across these networks are generally around 400 × 400 (sometimes displayed smaller). Always upload a square master; circular masks hide the corners, so keep important detail in the center.

Product photos, icons and print

Marketplaces like Etsy and Amazon prefer large product squares — start at 800 × 800 and go to 2000+ when the listing guidelines allow it. App icons typically begin from 512 × 512 or 1024 × 1024 masters. For print or archival copies, 2048 × 2048 is a practical high-resolution square.

How to export the right square size

1. Open resize image to square or the 1:1 aspect ratio converter.

2. Choose Crop for an edge-to-edge square or Fit to keep the whole photo with padding (solid color or blur).

3. Select the output preset that matches your platform — 500 for WhatsApp, 1080 for Instagram, 2048 for a high-res master — and download the PNG.

Processing stays on your device. There is no signup, no watermark and no upload. For a broader overview of crop versus fit, start on the Square Image homepage.
