How to keep your full photo in a WhatsApp DP
- 01
Upload your photo
Drag and drop, browse, or paste the picture you want as your WhatsApp profile photo. It opens right in your browser.
- 02
Fit it to a square
The whole photo is padded onto a square canvas — nothing gets cut off. Pick white, black or any background color, with 500 × 500 preselected.
- 03
Download and set as DP
Save the square PNG, then in WhatsApp go to Settings, tap your profile photo, choose the new image and confirm without zooming.
Why WhatsApp keeps cropping your profile photo
WhatsApp profile photos are stored as a 500 × 500 pixel square and shown as a circle in chats. The moment you pick a photo, WhatsApp forces it through a 1:1 crop — so a portrait loses its top and bottom, a group shot loses the friends standing at the edges, and a full-body picture usually ends up as just a torso.
This DP resizer solves it the other way around: instead of letting WhatsApp cut your photo down, it pads your full photo outto a perfect square. The shorter sides get a background color you choose — white, black or anything from the color picker — and the entire picture fits inside WhatsApp's crop frame with nothing to remove. The 500 × 500 preset matches WhatsApp's stored size exactly; use 1080 × 1080 if you want a sharper copy for other apps too.
Profile photos are personal, so it matters that this runs entirely in your browser: the picture is processed on your device with the Canvas API and never uploaded to any server.
Getting the DP right: circle mask and center framing
One more WhatsApp quirk to plan for: in chat lists your square DP is masked into a circle, which hides the four corners. The full square only appears when someone opens your profile. So after padding, make sure faces and anything essential sit near the center of the frame — the middle of the square is always visible, the corners are not.
When you set the new image, WhatsApp still shows its crop screen. Don't pinch-zoom — the square already matches the frame, so just confirm and the whole photo is kept. On iPhone, the same padded square also avoids the awkward auto-zoom effect iOS applies to non-square pictures.
Prefer a tight close-up instead of a padded full shot? Use crop image to square to frame a 1:1 headshot. And for the same no-crop trick on other platforms, see square image for Instagram or the general-purpose make an image square without cropping tool.
How to change your WhatsApp profile picture
Once your padded square is downloaded, setting it as your DP takes under a minute. The steps differ slightly between platforms:
On iPhone
- Open WhatsApp and tap Settings in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap your name and photo at the top of the Settings screen.
- Tap Edit next to your current photo, then choose Choose Photo and pick the square you just downloaded from your camera roll.
- The crop frame already matches your square image — don't pinch-zoom, just tap Choose to confirm.
On Android
- Open WhatsApp, tap the three dots in the top-right corner, then Settings.
- Tap your profile photo or name at the top.
- Tap the camera icon on the photo, choose Gallery, and select the downloaded square image.
- Leave the crop frame as it is and tap Done — the full photo is kept because the image is already 1:1.
On WhatsApp Web and Desktop
Click your profile photo in the top-left corner (or open Settings → Profile), click the photo, choose Upload photo and pick your square file. WhatsApp syncs the new DP to your phone automatically.
If the photo looks fine on the crop screen but blurry afterwards, re-export it here at 500 × 500 — WhatsApp downscales anything larger and its own compressor is harsher on very big files.
