Square the canvas, not the photo
Cropping is the obvious way to get a square image — but it costs you pixels. A full-body portrait loses feet or a head, a landscape loses its sky, a poster loses its title. This tool takes the opposite approach: it keeps your entire photo and grows the canvas instead, padding the shorter sides with a background until the image is a perfect 1:1 square.
The photo is never stretched or squashed — its proportions stay exactly as shot. You choose what fills the padded space: clean white for a gallery look, black for photography, a brand color picked with the color wheel, or true PNG transparency for logos and graphics.
Like every tool on this site, the conversion runs entirely in your browser with the Canvas API. Your image is never uploaded, and the export keeps the original resolution — the square's size is simply your photo's longest side.
Make any photo a perfect fit for social media
Feeds are unforgiving with rectangles. Facebook and Instagram preview non-square images with an automatic center crop, which regularly beheads portraits and chops the edges off group photos. The fix is to hand the platform a square it doesn't need to touch: fit your photo here, download the 1:1 PNG, and the whole picture shows up in the feed — padding and all.
The same trick works for WhatsApp profile pictures, where the square upload is cropped to a circle and tall photos lose most of their content. There is a dedicated WhatsApp DP resizerfor that, preset to WhatsApp's 500 × 500 size, and a square image tool for Instagram preset to 1080 × 1080.
And when you do want a tight, edge-to-edge square instead of a padded one, switch to the crop workflow: crop image to square cuts an exact 1:1 region with drag and zoom.
